The finished painting, "The mayor", oil on canvas, 60x40cm
Step 1.
I created a basic drawing using a burnt sienna pastel pencil, carefully measuring to see if I had the correct proportions. It's better to spend more time here and be sure you've got everything correct in place than to be hasty and do a lot of correcting in an almost finished painting. I fixated the pastel pencil lines and and painted transparent gesso over them. This allowed me to wipe off wet oil paint without losing the drawing.
I premixed some skin tones and started to paint the nose and eyes.

Step 2. In small tiles of colour I begin to block in the skintones, leaving open a few areas to prevent the painting from looking stale.
